Rubio Gonzalez's Record Helps Track and Field Kick Off Outdoor Season At Monmouth

3/25/2023 11:25:00 AM

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. — The 2023 outdoor season for the NJIT track and field teams started with a small but impactful contingent performing well at the Monmouth University Outdoor Season Opener.

Due to a last minute scheduling change by Monmouth, the Highlanders were only able to send a few of their throwers for the first day of the meet but that did not stop them from producing.

Freshman Iciar Rubio Gonzalez reset the NJIT school record in the discus throw in her first-ever collegiate outdoor meet, logging a toss of 39.97m / 131-1.00 that surpassed the previous mark of 39.58m / 129-10.00 set by former Highlander Sara Wells at the 2019 ASUN Championships.

In the men's discus, freshman Jason Ballen was one place off the top three and less than one meter off of the school record (42.47m / 139-4.00; Connor Letko, 2019 ASUNs) in the event with a fourth place toss of 41.63m / 136-7.00.

Rounding out the trio in attendance, Jaden Dixon set a new PR in the hammer throw by recording a toss of 39.90m / 130-11.00, besting his previous high water mark of 37.29m / 122-4.00 from the 2022 Metropolitan Championships.
