Men's Lacrosse Nearly Completes Dramatic Comeback In Loss At Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. — In one of the most exciting games in program history, the NJIT men's lacrosse team came back from an eight-goal deficit to nearly complete the rally in a narrow 17-16 America East road loss to the Binghamton Bearcats Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

HIGHLIGHTS  1ST QUARTER
  • The Highlanders struggled out of the gate as Binghamton scored the first six goals of the game. NJIT stopped that initial run after Corry cashed in a Wasitowski assist out of a timeout at the 2:48 mark. Two more Binghamton goals before the end of the period set the score at 8-1.
2ND QUARTER
  • Both teams traded goals to start the second, with Binghamton striking first to set their biggest deficit of the game (9-1 with 14:21 to go) and NJIT netting their second on a nifty Wasitowski behind-the-back pass and a Bowie score (13:18).
  • Wasitowski decided to get in on the scoring himself by adding a man-up goal off a Willson assist (9:54).
  • NJIT made it three in a row - and lowered the deficit to 9-3 - out of another timeout that saw Corry turn an isolation swim move into a solo score with 8:01 left.
  • Binghamton would stop the Highlander run with their tenth goal at the 6:25 mark and added their 11th at 5:09 to go ahead, 11-4.
  • The Highlanders responded with three straight goals of their own. The first two were the first of the year for Failla (4:49, from Hone) and Romaine (3:50), followed by the second of the game from Bowie (1:56).
  • Binghamton would score on an extra man opportunity with 11 seconds left in the half to go up 12-7 but Vanzomeren negated that score by taking the ensuing faceoff and scoring on his own. The game would enter halftime at 12-8 after NJIT won the second, 7-4.
3RD QUARTER
  • NJIT struck first to open the second half as Corry secured a hat trick off another Wasitowski assist with the shot clock winding down to cut the deficit to 12-9 at the 12:34 mark.
  • Binghamton would answer NJIT's goal with a 3-0 run to set the score at 15-9 but Hone's first goal of the game on a Bowie assist trimmed the Bearcats' lead back down to five, 15-10 with 5:34 remaining.
  • Romaine added his second goal of the game unassisted (15-11, 4:32) and Muscatella took a Willson pass and scored a behind-the-back EMO goal (3:51) to pull within three, 15-12.
4TH QUARTER
  • The first goal of the final period was another man-up score by NJIT, this time by Willson off a dish from Bowie. The score made the score 15-13 and made the deficit two goals for the first time since the opening period.
  • NJIT made it a one-goal affair (15-14) with 9:26 to go after a Keegan Ford interception led to a spectacular transition connection from Schreibeis to Hone.
  • NJIT's five-goal run was snapped by BInghamton at the 6:27 mark to set the score at 16-14 heading into the game's final media timeout.
  • Another forced turnover on an interception - this time by Muscatella - led to him finding Corry to bring the Highlanders back within one, 16-15 with 4:36 to go.
  • Yet another Highlander caused turnover got NJIT on the run and Muscatella tied the game at 16-16 with 4:08 left for the first time since the beginning of the game.
  • Less than a minute later, Binghamton broke the tie to make the score 17-16 with 3:14 on the clock.
  • After taking a timeout with 1:10 left, the Highlanders produced four shots at the goal but were unable to knot up the contest once again.
OTHER NOTES
  • Corry's four-score game is the third game of his career with at least four goals and his fifth hat trick as a Highlander.
  • Corry's active point streak has now reached 18 games (26 G, 15 A during that streak). The production run began last season at Army West Point on February 26, 2022.
  • NJIT's 16 goals are a season high and the most the program has posted since the 2020 season opener (24 against Hampton).
  • The team also posted season bests in assists (11), shots on goal (33), faceoff wins (20), and points (27).
PROGRAM PROGRESS
  • Despite today's defeat, the Highlanders are now 2-2 on the year in games decided by two or fewer goals. By contrast, the program went 0-19 in similar games from 2015-22.
