Men's Lacrosse Loses To Bryant In First Meeting Between Programs

NEWARK, N.J. — In its first-ever meeting against the Bryant Bulldogs, the NJIT men's lacrosse team was unable to pick up the series premiere victory in a 16-8 defeat Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

HIGHLIGHTS
1ST QUARTER
  • A frantic opening half of the first saw both teams combine for 11 shots over six-plus minutes before Muscatella and Bowie connected on the first goal of the game at the 8:29 mark.
  • Bryant would tie the ballgame about two minutes later (6:34) and take their first lead of the contest with 5:23 to go.
  • Bowie went from assist man to scorer on NJIT's second goal, converting on a pass from Keegan Ford to even the game at 2-2 (4:40).
  • The Highlanders turned defense into offense to regain a 3-2 lead as Brown made a save on a Bulldog transition opportunity and Mahony found Schreibeis for a transition goal on the other end (4:02).

2ND QUARTER
  • NJIT pushed their run to three straight goals and opened the second with a score as Labartino scored his first of the year off an assist from Corry.
  • Bryant would halt the Highlander surge at the 12:38 mark (4-3) and add three more goals in a row to go ahead, 6-4, with 9:19 to go in the half.

3RD QUARTER
  • Bryant scored their fifth straight 40 seconds into the second half to make the score 7-4 at the 14:20 mark.
  • The Bulldogs' run would expand to eight straight (10-4 at 7:18 mark) before goals from Bowie (from Hone) and Willson (from Bowie) brought NJIT back within four, 10-6 with 3:50 to go.
  • Bryant would answer with the final score of the period (2:13) to take an 11-6 advantage into the fourth.

4TH QUARTER
  • Bryant took a 12-6 lead on a Bryant goal that came off a deflected Brown save (13:37) but NJIT responded with a man-up score from Hone on an assist from Wasitowski less than a minute later (12:48) to make the score 12-7.
  • Out of a timeout, Corry added a goal to his ledger with an unassisted strike to make the score 12-8 with 6:57 remaining.
  • An ensuing Highlander penalty led to another Bryant goal (5:57) and a second goal less than ten seconds later put the Bulldogs back up, 14-8.
  • Bryant was hit with a three-minute unreleasable penalty for an illegal stick with 5:48 to go but the Highlander were unable to cut into the lead.
  • The final tally was settled after two more late Bryant goals.

OTHER NOTES
  • Corry's active point streak has now reached 19 games (26 G, 15 A during that streak). The production run began last season at Army West Point on February 26, 2022.
  • Corry is also at 49 career goals, one shy of being just the third Highlander to eclipse the 50-goal mark (Aaron Forster, 115; Ryan Darrow, 57).
  • Brown is close to a similar career mark: he has made 495, five away from being the second ever Highlander to pass 500 saves (Nick Marzullo, 579)
  • Labartino's goal was his first of the season and second of his career.
  • Bowerman's three caused turnovers were a career best.
  • A game after posting its second-fewest turnovers this season (16 at Binghamton), the Highlanders struggled to replicate that performance and recorded a season-high 27 turnovers.
  • This inaugural meeting between NJIT and Bryant was delayed 1,071 days due to the COVID-19 pandemic - the two teams were scheduled to play in the 2020 season finale as members of the Northeast Conference on April 25, 2020 (NJIT was set to play its first-ever conference season in the NEC as an affiliate that year) but never did after all of its conference games were canceled. Bryant officially joined the America East on July 1, 2022.
NEXT UP
NJIT will take on Merrimack College on Saturday, April 8 in North Andover, MA at 3 p.m.
