NEWARK, NJ–Senior Martin de Chavarria registered a match-best 11 kills, leading NJIT to a 3-0 home victory over visiting George Mason in EIVA Conference men's volleyball action inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.
NJIT gets back into the win column, moving to 8-12 overall, 2-3 in the EIVA while George Mason's seven-match win-streak was snapped, falling to 9-10, 1-3 in the conference. NJIT sweeps the regular season series with George Mason as the Highlanders recorded a thrilling 3-2 victory back on January 26.
The Highlanders, which hit an impressive .508 for the match, swept visiting George Mason in straight sets–25-20, 25-12 and 25-22.
NJIT's De Chavarria who missed the last eight matches due to ankle injury, returned back into the Highlanders starting lineup, combining for 11 kills on 12 swings with just one error for a .833 hitting percentage.
Graduate student Jens Feldthus added eight kills followed by Julian Meissner (6) and Antonio Feliciano (6).
Setter Roque Nido piled up a match-best 27 assists to go along with a match-high nine digs. Nido added five kills on five attempts for a 1.000 hitting percentage and added two block assists.
NJIT held a 16-to-2 advantage in front of the net paced by freshman Andrew Fedmasu's four block assists followed by Felthus (three block assists), de Chavarria (three block assists), Meissner (two block assists) and Feliciano (two block assists).
Feldthus and Feliciano paced the match with three service aces as the Highlanders held a 7-to-2 advantage in that category.
NJIT scored four-out-of-five points early in the frame for a 10-7 lead, resulting in a George Mason timeout. George Mason rallied to cut the Highlander lead to within two, 14-12 in the early teens but NJIT pushed its lead back up to four, 18-14, on a kill by Martin de Chavarria. The Patriots cut the lead to within three, 22-19, but NJIT closed out the frame on a 3-1 spurt for a 25-20 win. Jens Feldthus led the Highlanders with five kills while Roque Nido added seven assists and five digs.
The Highlanders took control early in the second set, jumping out to a 6-0 lead. The Patriots scored four straight points for a 9-4 score but NJIT continued its momentum and increased its advantage to as many as nine, 17-8, behind six consecutive points for the Highlanders. NJIT scored the last four-out-of-five points, including back-to-back aces from Jens Feldthus to go ahead 2-0 with a 25-12 lead.
NJIT opened the third frame with an 8-4 lead and extended its advantage to seven, 14-7. George Mason made its way back into the set, scoring three straight points, pulling within four late on two occasions, 15-11 and 19-15, resulting in a Highlander timeout. George Mason used a run of six straight points to knot the set at 19-all. The set saw three more ties the final at 21 as the home team scored the next three for a 24-22 lead. De Chavarria put the match away with a kill for a 3-0 home sweep with a 25-22 victory.
NJIT will break for a week and return to action on March 31-April 1 when the Highlanders visit Charleston (WV). First spike on both days is set for 7pm and 4pm.
