NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT men's tennis team is off to their best start in program history at 8-0 and the squad was rewarded on Tuesday with its highest-ranking in program history.
NJIT is ranked #65 in the
ITA's computerized rankings, marking the the first time in program it has been in the Top-75.
"It's an amazing feeling to be in the top 65 in the country," explained second-year Head Coach
Marco Matteucci. "This is the product of the guys hard work and dedication to achieve the vision we set forth at the beginning of the year! It's all them, I just gave them the tools!"
The Highlanders are the only team from the Southland Conference in the rankings and are ahead of both Princeton and Yale in the rankings.
NJIT has been led this season by sophomore
Pablo Perez Ramos, who is a perfect 8-0 in both singles and doubles at the top position in each. Perez Ramos has teamed with
Josh Smith all season at #1 doubles. Freshman
Wil Jenkins is also 8-0 in singles play, with six of those wins coming at #5 and one each at #4 and #6, respectively.
The Highlanders will look to keep their perfect season alive on Friday when they host Navy at 4pm in the Naimoli Tennis Center.
"We still have a long year ahead of us and it's going to take heart, discipline and a little luck along the way, but we have certainly set a benchmark to where we think we can be at the end of the year and in future years to come!," concluded Matteucci.
