Men’s and Women’s Fencing Wraps Up 2023 Campaign at Tradition Tournament

FAIRFIELD, CT–The NJIT men's and women's fencing teams wrapped up its 2023 campaign at the Tradition Tournament hosted by Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon.

The lone wins on the day for both NJIT men and women came against Vassar (Men - 17-10) and (Women - 15-12).

Leading the way for the NJIT women was Dominika Pawlowska who combined for a 12-2 overall mark in women's epee competition. She went 3-0 against Vassar and NYU, 2-0 against host Sacred Heart and 2-1 against Penn State and Temple.

Megan Hillyer, a transfer from Sacred Heart (played one season for the Pioneers in 2022-23), went 8-6 on the day on the epee strip.

The epee squad combined for a 27-18 overall record on the day for a 60% winning percentage. 

On the men's side, graduate student Cristian Candescu paced the Highlanders with a 10-3 overall mark in the men's foil competition followed by Kevin Katayma who went 8-7.  Candescu picked up 3-0 wins against Penn State and NYU and registered a 2-1 mark vs. host Sacred Heart.  Katayama went 3-0 against Sacred Heart and NYU.

Sophomore Adrian Figueredo posted an 8-7 mark in the men's saber competition, picking up 2-1 victories over Penn State, Sacred Heart and Vassar.

Both teams will break and return to action in 2024 at the Philadelphia Invitational hosted by UPenn on January 20.
