NEWARK, NJ–Sophomore Hugo Tavares was named one of nearly 400 players eligible for the 2024 Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft, announced by MLS.
Tavares, a midfielder from Porto, Portugal started all 19 matches in 2023 for the Highlanders, tallying five goals, two assists for 12 points.
A season ago, Tavares was named to the 2022 America East Conference All-Rookie team, starting all 16 matches ranking second on the Highlander team with three goals and tied for second with six points.
"This is a testament to our soccer program and how highly its placed in the top 50 RPI, that Hugo Tavares got this accolade," head coach Fernando Barboto commented ahead of the SuperDraft. "Hugo has worked so hard to improve and it has paid off with this nomination."
Cited by NorthernTribune.ca website, Tavares, born in Lac-Megantic Quebec, spent a portion of his childhood in Portugal, and played for Canada at the U-20 level and even suited up for USL2 side Thunder Bay Chill this summer, landing Rookie of the Season honors with the Ontario-based side.
