Owens, Johnson Lead Track And Field Teams At Wagner Invitational

1/7/2023 1:06:00 AM

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The NJIT men's and women's track and field teams kicked off 2023 and resumed their indoor campaigns on Friday evening by taking part in the Wagner College Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

HIGHLANDER RECORDS
  • Freshman Maria Owens continued the excellent start to her collegiate career by surpassing her long jump record from the Seahawk Shootout (5.47m / 17-11.50) with an event-winning leap of 5.55m / 18-2.50), her second time changing NJIT's record book in as many meets.
  • Fellow newcomer Jaden Johnson kept the newcomer record streak going by resetting his school mark in the triple jump for the second time. Johnson's runner up performance of 14.42m / 47-3.75 was enough to supplant his mark of 14.31m / 46-11.50 from last month's Seahawk Shootout.
  • McKinleigh Mattie took down a nearly decade-old school record in the triple jump, putting together a fifth-place mark of 11.17m / 36-7.75 to push former Highlander Cristina DeCristofaro (10.49m / 34-5.00, 2014) from the top stop.
  • Iciar Rubio Gonzalez's sixth-place toss of 11.83m / 38-9.75 in the shot put was good enough to establish a new school mark in the event.
OTHER TOP FIVE PERFORMANCES NEXT UP
NJIT returns to Ocean Breeze next week on Friday, January 13 for the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartan Invite.
