Saylor's Saves Help Women's Soccer Draw With Undefeated Drexel

PHILADELPHIA — A historic performance for redshirt senior Molly Saylor allowed the NJIT women's soccer team to remain unbeaten in 2022.

A career-high 14-save effort by Saylor allowed the Highlanders to play undefeated Drexel to a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon at Vidas Field.

THE RUNDOWN
  • Saylor put on a masterclass in goal to protect the Highlanders from an early season-high 26-shot offensive attack from Drexel.
  • Saylor eclipsed her career high in saves (10; done four times) in the first half with 11 stops and added three more in the second.
  • Since joining the America East in the 2020 season (played in Spring 2021), only Vermont's Lydia Kessel (17 saves vs Stony Brook, Apr. 15, 2021) has made more saves in a game than Saylor.
  • Saylor's effort Sunday ranks in the top five at NJIT, all-time or in the Division I era (since 2006). The school mark of 18 was set by Samantha Bersett against Lipscomb on Oct. 24, 2015. Bersett also shares the No. 2 spot (15 against Utah Valley on Oct. 5, 2012) with Bruna Lotufo (vs IPFW on Aug. 31, 2006) and Ketsia Mesidor (vs Bridgeport on Sept. 17, 1997).
  • Saylor's 14 saves were two shy of the current single game national high, set by CSUN's Taylor Thames and Olivia Mackethan of Saint Peter's (16).
  • Despite conceding a 26-4 edge on shots (14-3 SOG) and an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks, Saylor, fifth year Siani Magruder, and the Highlander backline kept their composure and extended the program's current unbeaten streak to nine games, dating back to last season.
  • Finding ways to earn results early in the season will certainly pay dividends down the road. In fact, with three ties already in 2022, the Highlanders have matched their program high, set in four other seasons (2019, 2016, 2012, 2005).
EXTRA TIME
  • Saylor's previous double-digit save efforts - all career-high ten save games - came at UMBC on Oct. 14, 2021; at Pitt on Aug. 29, 2021; at Maine on Mar. 14, 2021 (2020 season); and vs North Florida on Oct. 6, 2019).
  • Four players accounted for NJIT's four shots on Sunday: Ciara Adams, Lauren Chamberlain, Magruder, and Bailey Chant.
NEXT UP
NJIT will wrap up its current road trip with a contest against Wagner on Wednesday, August 31. Kickoff on Staten Island is scheduled for 7 p.m.
