Wagner Rallies To Hand Women's Soccer First Loss

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The NJIT women's soccer team's unbeaten run came to a close as the Wagner Seahawks rallied to defeat the Highlanders, 2-1, Wednesday evening at Hameline Field.

THE RUNDOWN
  • After a scoreless first half that saw NJIT control the attack (10-5 lead on shots, 3-1 on corner kicks), the Highlanders finally broke through to take the lead.
  • Junior Sydney Watson gave NJIT the advantage in the 68th minute by heading home a left side corner kick from sophomore Aleesha Deshmukh. The goal was the first of Watson's 24-game collegiate career.
  • The Highlanders were well on their way to holding on for the win but Wagner would strike back twice within the final ten minutes. A breakaway score (83') from Olivia Rubbo and a short counter and long shot from Madison Carr (89') would prove decisive.
  • Redshirt senior Molly Saylor made five saves in another 90 minutes of play, marking the third time in five contests she has made at least five stops.
EXTRA TIME
  • For NJIT, the defeat snapped its four-match winning streak against Wagner (which dates back to 2016) and its school record nine-match unbeaten streak (dating back to last season's five-game run to close out).
  • The Highlanders have scored seven games so far this year - five have come from headers, five have been assisted, and three have been headers assisted by Deshmukh.
