Women's Soccer Plays Seton Hall To Scoreless Draw

NEWARK, N.J. — The NJIT women's soccer team secured another draw with a Big East opponent, finishing its matchup against Seton Hall with a 0-0 tie Thursday evening at Owen T. Carroll Field.

THE RUNDOWN
  • NJIT (1-0-2) remains unbeaten after three games to start the season. The last time the Highlanders opened a campaign without a loss after at least three games was 2016, when NJIT opened the year on a six-match unbeaten run (4-0-2 during that stretch).
  • The first half of Thursday's game looked eerily similar to the team's first-ever meeting last season: a scoreless draw and close total shot numbers (2021: 13 total, 8-5 SHU; 2022: 10 total, 6-4 SHU). However, NJIT had a pair of excellent chances that just did not bounce the Highlanders' way.
  • In the 24th minute, sophomore Ciara Adams had a prime opportunity to head home the go-ahead score on an entry pass from sophomore Taylor Pape but the ball took a high hop and Adams' header went out high.
  • Freshman Briana Andreoli put her speed on display through the offensive third and had a great look from the left side in the 42nd minute but her shot hit the right side of the crossbar and bounced away.
  • NJIT nearly stole the game in the waning moments (89') after turning over the Pirates in their defensive third but sophomore Caroline Caputo's 18-yard shot narrowly sailed wide right.
  • Molly Saylor picked up another shutout with a three-save effort against Seton Hall, pushing her tally to 16 for her career.
  • Caputo led the offensive attack with three of NJIT's seven total shots. Senior Lauren Chamberlain took two to go along with Adams and Andreoli's attempts.
EXTRA TIME
  • Including the last five games of 2021, NJIT is now riding an eight-match unbeaten streak, the longest such run in program history.
  • The two draws against Big East members St. John's and Seton Hall show marked improvement for the program from the Highlanders' results against them from last year - a pair of shutout defeats.
NEXT UP
NJIT will continue its road trip on Sunday, August 28 with a trip to Philadelphia to take on Drexel. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
