Women's Soccer Takes Season Opener With 4-0 Shutout Of LIU

NEWARK, N.J. — The NJIT women's soccer team opened their 2022 campaign in emphatic fashion with a 4-0 shutout of the LIU Sharks Thursday evening at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

THE RUNDOWN

The Highlanders (1-0) were led by sophomore Ciara Adams, who secured her first career brace with NJIT's first two goals of the contest (6', 54'). Adams' second and third career goals make her the first Highlander to score multiple goals in a game since teammate Bailey Chant netted a pair in NJIT's 6-0 rout of Saint Peter's last season (Sept. 4).
Daniella Vito and Lauren Chamberlain provided the Highlanders' other two scores less than two minutes apart, with Vito recording her first career goal in the 83rd minute and Lauren Chamberlain's recording her seventh all-time in the 85th minute.
The season-opening home shutout victory was the first for NJIT since a 3-0 win over Wagner on Aug. 19, 2016.
NJIT extended its current school record shutout streak to six games and over 585 minutes (585:19) with the win Thursday.
The victory was also the first in program history over any incarnation of LIU (0-7-2 all-time against C.W. Post/LIU Post, LIU Brooklyn, and LIU prior to Thursday).
Molly Saylor also added to her career shutout tally with her 15th all-time clean sheet against the Sharks. The redshirt senior played all 90 minutes and only needed to make one save. The last time Saylor faced so little resistance was in the Saint Peter's match last year (also one save).
NJIT held LIU's offensive attack in check, only allowing the Sharks to register four total shots. The last time the Highlander defense conceded four shots or fewer in a victory was against Wagner on Sept. 2, 2021 (1-0 win, four shots allowed).

EXTRA TIME

NJIT nearly scored all of its goals via header. Adams' first score was headed home after an LIU deflection of an Angela Harris cross sailed back towards the net and into her pathway. Her second was a bit more conventional - a lofted header from about eight yards out off a left wing cross from Chamberlain. Vito joined the game of "Heads Up" by converting a left sided free kick from sophomore Aleesha Deshmukh at the far right post. Chamberlain decided to switch things up by beating three defenders to the left of the penalty arc and going left side upper 90 across her body for the score.
Before Thursday, NJIT had not had multiple goals scored or multiple goal scorers in a game since the 2021 Saint Peter's matchup (six goals by five players).
The 2016 season opening win over Wagner was also head coach Ally Nick's first-ever win at NJIT.
The 2021 one-save win against Wagner - won on a header by Taylor Pape.

NJIT will close out the weekend on Sunday, August 21 with another home match against St. John's. Kickoff is scheduled for Noon.
