NEWARK, NJ—Three different Highlanders scored, leading NJIT to a 3-0 victory over visiting, Wagner in the 2016 women's soccer season opener for both sides Friday evening.
The match was first scheduled to be played at Kean University's East Campus Facility in Union, NJ, at 4pm, but was moved to neighboring Rutgers University-Newark Alumni Field at 5pm due to field conditions.
In the Highlanders 3-0 victory, first-year head coach
Ally Nick, who came to NJIT in March 2016, having been a winner as a player and assistant coach in the successful program at La Salle in Philadelphia, registered her first career head coaching victory.
The Highlanders first scoring opportunity came in the 17
th minute off a corner kick by sophomore
Melanie Zrno. Senior
Dana Schules, the Highlanders 5-foot-3 defender, positioned herself on the right post, heading the ball but the shot deflected off the crossbar.
Freshman
Fiorella Doglio, who entered the game in the 21st minute, made an immediate impact in the match, scoring her first collegiate goal of the season three minutes later, putting the Highlanders on the board, 1-0, in the 24th.
Doglio, a 2015 Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division Honoree for eighth-ranked Wardlaw-Hartridge High School, received the ball from
Noelle Batista and blasted a 25-yard shot with her left foot into the back of the net.
The Highlanders added insurance in the 60th minute on a goal from sophomore
Neema Liverpool. Sophomore
Arianna Gerber, who was named to the Atlantic Sun Conference all-Freshman team in 2015, took the ball down the left sideline and sent a cross into the box to a running Liverpool, who one-timed it in for the Highlanders second goal of the game.
Doglio and Liverpool are reunited back on the field as NJIT teammates after playing at Wardlaw-Hartridge High School in Edison, NJ.
NJIT's 2-0 lead grew to 3-0 on
Nicole Baldassini's unassisted goal at 74:27. Baldassini's goal came from 18 yards out at the top of the box into the upper right corner.
Senior goalkeeper
Karen David recorded her first shutout of the season, registering, two saves for the Highlanders.
NJIT tested Seahawk goalkeeper Jessica Wilm, tallying 14 total shots with nine of them on-goal. Wilm finished the game with six saves.
Gerber led the Highlander offense, posting three shots on goal and five overall.
NJIT will return to action on Monday, August 22 when the Highlanders host Hartford at 4pm. The match will be played in Union, NJ on the campus of Kean University.
