BRONX, NY - The NJIT baseball team scored four runs in the top of the 13th inning on Tuesday for a 7-3 victory against host Fordham at Houlihan Field.
Jared Donnelly's RBI single scored
Nick Hussey to break a 3-3 tie and
David Marcano followed it up with a three-run home run to put the Highlanders in front for the first time since they led 3-2 in the ninth inning.Â
Alex DiBona tossed his third scoreless inning in the home half of the 13th to earn the second win of his career and give NJIT its first-ever win at Fordham and just the second all-time vs. the Rams.Â
DiBona was one of six NJIT pitchers that combined to allow just two earned runs in the 13-inning game. The senior came on to begin the 11th inning and was perfect in his first two innings of work before working around a leadoff single in the 13th inning.
Three different Highlanders -
Paul Franzoni,
David Marcano, and
Julio Marcano each had three-hit games in the win. Franzoni now has had at least two hits in six-straight games to bring his batting average up to ,304 for the season.
Julio Marcano's first hit of the day came in the second inning and scored his brother David from second base, marking the 128th RBI of his career, a new program-record.
The record-breaking RBI made the score 2-0, a lead the Highlanders held until the seventh inning. Fordham tied the game in the bottom of the seventh when it looked like the Marcano twins would team up on an inning-ending double play, but the throw to first sailed wide of the bag and allowed to Rams to score and tie the game.
NJIT regained the lead in the top of the ninth when
Julio Marcano came around to score all the way from first base on a failed pickoff attempt that wound up way down the right field line.
Fordham tied the game in bottom of the ninth and neither team was able to get another run until Donnelly's big hit in the 13th inning.Â
NJIT will look to make it two in a row on Friday when they travel to Vestal, NY for the first contest of a three-game America East series at Binghamton. First pitch is slated for 6pm.
