Maine Comes From Behind to Defeat NJIT in Series Finale

Albert Choi Records Four Hits in 7-6 Loss

ORONO, ME - The NJIT baseball team suffered a 7-6 setback on Sunday as Maine scored a pair of runs in the ninth-inning to earn the walk-off victory at Mahaney Diamond.

Maine is now 12-14 overall and 9-3 in America East play, while the Highlanders drop to 13-13 on the season and are a game back of the Black Bears at 8-4.

Albert Choi opened the scoring with a solo home run in the top of the first and Paul Franzoni made it 3-0 two innings later with a two-run blast that also scored Choi.

Maine got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the fourth to cut the Highlanders' lead to just one, but NJIT immedately answered with three runs in the fifth. Two of those runs came on a two-RBI single from Luke Longo, while the third came via a sacrifice fly off the bat of Nick Hussey.

The Black Bears chipped away at the NJIT lead with a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh to once again make it a one-run game.

Jake Rappaport was able to get out of trouble in the seventh and eighth innings, but Maine got runners on in the ninth thanks to a hit by pitch and a walk before a one-out double scored both runners and gave the Black Bears the victory and the series win.

Choi was 4-for-5 for his second four-hit game of the season, while Franzoni also had a multi-hit game with two. David Marcano legged out an infield single in the fourth inning to extend his hitting streak to 18.

Joe Georgini started on the mound for NJIT and allowed just two runs, a pair of solo home runs, in four innings of work.

The Highlanders will look to get back into the win column on Tuesday when they travel to Rider for a non-conference game against the Broncs. First pitch is slated for 3:30pm in Lawrenceville.
