Mekhi Gray Sets New Career Highs with 19 Points and Five Assists

STONY BROOK, NY - The NJIT men's basketball team was defeated in its regular season finale on Tuesday evening, falling 87-68 to host Stony Brook in America East Conference action at Island Federal Arena.

The Highlanders wrap up the regular season with an overall record of 11-17 and finish their 2021-22 America East slate with a 6-12 conference record. Stony Brook concludes its season 18-13 and 10-8 in conference action.

The Seawolves opened the game with a three-pointer from Tykei Greene 14 seconds in and led for the final 39:46 of the contest.

Da'mir Faison answered Green's triple with a driving layup on the next position, but the hosts scored 12 off the next 15 points to take a 15-5 lead just over eight minutes in.

Stony Brook's led by 11, 39-28, at halftime, and extended the margin to as many as 25 late in the second half, before ultimately winning by the 19-point margin to split the season series with NJIT.

Mekhi Gray and Miles Coleman led the Highlanders with 19 points each. Gray's scoring output was a career-high, as were the sophomore's five assists as he played all 40 minutes for the fourth time in the last five games.

Matt Faw scored 10 points to join Gray and Coleman in double figures. Faw also grabbed six rebounds to tie Coleman for the team-high.

Greene led all scorers with 27 points, while Omar Habwe also shined offensively for Stony Brook, scoring 20 points of his own.

The Highlanders will take the court again on Sunday in the quarterfinals of the America East Playoffs. NJIT will play either top-seeded Vermont or second-seeded UMBC depending on the outcome of Thursday evening's UMass Lowell at Hartford contest. If UMass Lowell wins, the Highlanders will travel north to Vermont and if Hartford gets the victory NJIT will head south to Baltimore. Game times will be announced later in the week.
