Baseball Drops a Pair at Undefeated Wake Forest

Highlanders and Demon Deacons Wrap Up Series on Sunday at 1pm

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The NJIT baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to host Wake Forest on Saturday at David F. Couch Ballpark. Wake Forest took game one 9-2 before coming from behind to win the nightcap 8-5.

The Demon Deacons remain undefeated through seven games this season, while NJIT is now 2-4 in 2022, with all four losses coming to ACC opponents. 

Game One
Wake Forest scored a pair of runs in the first inning and two more in the second to jump out to an early 4-0 lead.

NJIT was able to cut the lead in half, however, scoring two runs in the fourth inning as Julio Marcano scored on a WFU error and Ray Ortiz knocked in Cole Fleming with an RBI groundout. 

The Demon Deacons immediately answered though, scoring four more times in the home half of the fourth to go ahead 8-2, and added an insurance run in the sixth to win by the 9-2 score.

Nick Hussey, Paul Franzoni and Kevin Putsky each had a hit for NJIT in the loss, while Andrew Eppinger pitched two scoreless innings out of the bullpen. 

Game Two
Wake Forest plated the first run of the game in the first inning, but NJIT answered with the next four as Julio Marcano doubled home Albert Choi in the fourth to tie the game and a two-run single from Jared Donnelly made the score 3-1 in hte fourth. 

Nick Hussey's first home run of the season put NJIT ahead by three in the sixth inning, but the hosts rallied, scoring five runs in the seventh go back in front 6-4. Donnelly knocked in his third run of the game in the eighth to get the Highlanders within one, but that was as close as they'd get. A two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth gave the Demon Deacons the three-run win.

Donnelly finished the game 3-for-4, while Hussey was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks three runs scored.

The Highlanders and Demon Deacons wrap up their four-game series on Sunday back at David F. Couch Ballpark. First pitch is slated for 1pm.
