NEWARK, NJ - The NJIT men's tennis team defeated visiting Binghamton 4-3 in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Naimoli Tennis Center.
The win snapped a three-match losing skid for the Highlanders, who are now 2-3 on the season. Binghamton's record now stands at 1-10 as the Bearcats have dropped four in a row, all by the score of 4-3.
Junior
Ammar Fekry clinched the victory for NJIT, pulling out a three-set win at fourth singles.
"This was another good team win for us," explained first-year Head Coach
Marco Matteucci. "I am very happy for Ammar, who clinched it for us in his first match back in the lineup after dealing with injuries for months."
The Highlanders got on the scoreboard first, earning the doubles point thanks to victories at the first and second doubles spots.
Josh Smith and Samuel Towns won 7-5 at first doubles, while
Abdullah Fouad and
Daniel Sabogal picked up a 6-3 victory at second doubles.
The teams split the six singles points, with NJIT getting wins at second and fourth singles, in addition to Fekry's big win at the number five spot.
Josh Smith won convincingly at second singles, while Oscar Collo von Platen also won in two sets at the number four spot.
"Binghamton pushed us to the limits and we came out with the win," added Matteucci. "We need to get back to work this week and keep on improving the details we speak about. We have to more challenging matches ahead next weekend."
The Highlanders return to the court on Saturday when they host St. Joseph's back at the Naimoli Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 1pm.
