NEW HAVEN, CT – The NJIT men's tennis team continued its fall season at the Yale Invitational over the weekend, with the Highlanders earning multiple victories in singles and doubles action against competition from Fairfield, Yale, Columbia and Quinnipiac.

NJIT opened the weekend with four victories on Friday. In doubles, junior Riccardo Campagnola and sophomore Francisco Guimaraes earned a 6-4 victory over Fairfield's Alcala and Garza. In singles play, junior Soma Fukuhara opened his weekend with a dominant 6-0, 6-3 victory over Fairfield's Jessett, while freshman Arijan Kaliterna defeated Garza, 6-3, 6-2. Guimaraes also picked up a straight-set victory, defeating Di Staulo, 6-3, 6-3.

The Highlanders continued their strong play on Saturday, collecting four singles victories and one doubles win. Yerassyl Bakhtiyar earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Yale's Weng, while Kaliterna defeated Yale's Zhang, 7-5, 7-5. Fukuhara battled back after dropping the opening set to Columbia's Valentine, winning the final two sets, including a 10-point tiebreaker, to take the match 1-6, 6-3, 10-7. 

In doubles action, Kaliterna and Hankins earned a 6-4 victory over Yale's Zhang and Weng.

NJIT closed out the invitational with seven more victories on Sunday. Campagnola and Kaliterna earned a 7-6 (4) doubles victory over Columbia's Kelley and Valentine, while Hankins and Bakhtiyar defeated Quinnipiac's Burridge and Sughakar, 6-3. Severin Risan and Guimaraes also picked up a 6-1 doubles victory over Quinnipiac's Sciacca and Sjoholm.

Bakhtiyar continued his successful weekend in singles play, defeating Quinnipiac's Hoxha, 6-4, 4-6, 10-1. Guimaraes earned his second singles victory of the weekend with a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over Quinnipiac's Burridge. Kaliterna completed a perfect singles weekend with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Columbia's Ena, while Hankins closed out the weekend with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Quinnipiac's Sjoholm.

Kaliterna finished the weekend with three singles victories, while Fukuhara, Guimaraes, Bakhtiyar and Hankins each collected multiple singles wins. The Highlanders also recorded four doubles victories throughout the invitational.

"It's always great to be invited to Yale's Fall tournament, we get to compete against the IVYs and other strong teams in our region. Super proud of Arijan with this weekend going undefeated in both singles and doubles, but not to take away from some other good performances from the rest, winning doubles matches against Columbia and Yale as well as other good singles performances. Overall a very positive weekend!" said Head Coach Marco Matteccui.
