Women's Soccer Defeated By Monmouth In Home Opener

NEWARK, N.J. --- The NJIT women's soccer team had its 2021 home opener spoiled by the visiting Monmouth Hawks in a 2-0 setback Monday evening at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The Highlanders (0-2) came out with an extra burst of energy defensively, given the extra day of rest provided by Tropical Storm Henri postponing the game from Sunday to Monday. While the same could be said for Monmouth (2-0) based on their first half shot total (+12), the Hawks only put three shots on goal thanks to the Highlander defense and all three were saved by goalkeeper Molly Saylor.

The two in-state rivals ended the first 45 minutes in a scoreless deadlock before the Hawks scored their eventual game-winner in the 54th minute. A Highlander transition turnover in the midfield allowed Monmouth to score coast-to-coast and take a 1-0 lead over the host Highlanders.

Monmouth would add a second goal in the 82th minute, gathering a loose ball to the right of goal and scoring past a number of defenders.

NJIT only registered four total shots, including one shot by Lauren Chamberlain that was saved by Monmouth, but the Highlanders came close to putting together chances on a number of crosses and corners throughout the game.

Saylor was able to make a season-high seven saves, including matching her total of four from Thursday's opener at St. John's in the second half against Monmouth.
