Stafflinger Tosses Complete Game Shutout as NJIT Splits With First-Place Stony Brook

Highlanders and Seawolves to Wrap Up Four-Game Series with Another Doubleheader Sunday

STONY BROOK, NY - The NJIT baseball team split an America East doubleheader at host Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon in the first two of four games this weekend at Joe Nathan Field.

NJIT (16-20, 15-15 AE) took game one 2-0 behind an outstanding pitching performance from veteran right-hander Tyler Stafflinger, but Stony Brook (23-14, 19-7) won game two 11-3 to split the doubleheader.

Game One Recap
Stafflinger was tremendous en route to a complete game shutout, NJIT's first since Stafflinger himself accomplished the feat in a 7-0 victory over Maryland-Eastern Shore on March 10, 2018.

The graduate student struck out four and did not walk or hit a batter, while scattering five hits.

Offensively, both of NJIT's runs came in the fifth inning on a two-run home run from David Marcano, who returned to the lineup after missing the last 15 game due to injury. Marcano scored his brother, Julio Marcano after the latter's second hit of the game.

Stafflinger kept his impressive afternoon going after Marcano's home run, allowing just two Seawolves to reach base over the final three innings. With one out and a runner on first in the bottom of the seventh, Stafflinger was able to get a groundball right to second baseman Daniel Helfgott, who flipped it to shortstop Julio Marcano, who then hit first baseman Nick Hussey to complete the game-ending 4-6-3 double play.

Julio Marcano reached base in all three plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a walk.

Stafflinger needed just 79 pitches to complete the seven-inning complete game shutout.

Game Two Recap
NJIT saw its six-game winning streak come to and end as Stony Brook scored the first four runs of the game and cruised to the 11-3 victory.

The Highlander were able to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth when Albert Choi's single scored Paul Franzoni, but a six-run sixth inning gave Stony Brook a comfortable lead that it would hold on to.

Choi's single increased his reached base streak to 21 games, which is the longest for a Highlander since Justin Etts reached safely in 22 straight games back in 2017.

Alex DiBona was a bright spot out of the bullpen for NJIT, getting a pair of strikeouts during a perfect eighth inning of relief.

On Deck
The Highlanders and Seawolves are set to complete their four-game series with another doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch of game one is slated for 12pm back at Joe Nathan Field.
