Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Narrowly Edged By Binghamton, 11-9

VESTAL, N.Y. --- The NJIT men's lacrosse team and the Binghamton Bearcats wrapped up their home-and-home season series with a closely contested, highly entertaining battle but the visiting Highlanders were unable to secure the victory, falling 11-9 to the Bearcats Saturday afternoon at the Bearcats Sports Complex.

NJIT (1-6, 1-4 AE) showed tremendous growth, nearly winning a second consecutive game after claiming its first win of the season and first-ever conference victory last week against UMass Lowell. The Highlanders and Bearcats (3-2, 3-2 AE) combined for five ties and a pair of lead changes, converted on one man-up goal each, were extremely close in shots on goal (BING 26-22) and saves (NJIT 15-13), and matched each other in turnovers (19) and caused turnovers (12).

The Highlanders were paced by freshman Jack Bowie, who tied for the game high in goals (3) and points (5). Sophomore Gavyn Willson (2 G, 1 A), senior Collin Fogerty (2 G, 1 A), and senior Max Willson (3 A) each logged three points while freshmen Garrett Muscatella and reigning America East Offensive Player of the Week Owen Corry added a goal apiece.

Sophomore Liam Brown had another strong outing, making 15 saves in 60 minutes and helping the Highlanders stay within striking distance.

1ST QUARTER
NJIT found itself down a pair of goals midway through the first but Fogerty brought the Highlanders back even with a pair of scores in a just under three minute span. Fogerty scored his first goal (5:56) after intercepting a clearing pass in Binghamton's defensive half and taking it to the cage himself. The senior's second tally (3:04) came at the end of fluid offensive movement around the cage and was set up by an assist from Willson from behind the net.

2ND QUARTER
Binghamton repeated their first quarter start, scoring the first two goals of the period to take a 4-2 lead before the 13-minute mark. NJIT responded strong, closing the half by posting three of the period's final four goals with Bowie leading the way. Wilson connected with Bowie (12:10) to cut Binghamton's lead to one (4-3) and after another Bearcat goal pushed their lead back to two, Bowie scored a man-up goal off a Wilson assist (5:37) and set up Muscatella on the tying score (1:53).

3RD QUARTER
NJIT came out swinging early in the second half, converting on a Wilson to Willson connection less than a minute into the period and taking its first lead of the game (14:20). Willson extended the Highlander lead with 10:16 left in the period, scoring with the shot clock winding down to put NJIT ahead, 7-5.

The Bearcats snapped what had been a 4-0 NJIT run at the 8:56 mark with their first score of the half, which started a 3-0 run of their own to retake the lead, 8-7 (5:38). NJIT would turn defense to offense to tie the game at 8-8, forcing a turnover at midfield and pushing the pace until Fogerty found Bowie in front of the net to continue the stalemate.

4TH QUARTER
Binghamton broke the latest tie at the 9:25 mark to take a 9-8 lead but Corry helped square the game again for the Highlanders with an unassisted score with 5:09 remaining in the game but the Bearcats would close out the game with two more goals in the final four minutes of the game.

OTHER NOTES
  • NJIT narrowly missed out on recording back-to-back double-digit scoring games for the first time since they posted four straight games with ten or more from March 23 to April 13, 2019 (11 vs Wagner, 10 at Manhattan, 26 at Hampton, 18 at Siena).
NEXT UP
NJIT returns home on Saturday, April 10 for a matchup against Stony Brook. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
