Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Defeated By No. 17/20 UAlbany In Road Finale

ALBANY, N.Y. --- The NJIT men's lacrosse ended its 2021 road schedule with a 18-8 defeat against the No. 17/20 UAlbany Great Danes Saturday afternoon at John Fallon Field.

The Highlanders (1-9, 1-7 AE) were paced by senior Collin Fogerty, who produced a team-high three points on the afternoon (1 G, 2 A).

Senior Max Wilson matched his career high with two goals, which were matched by sophomore Owen Corry. Sophomore Gavyn Willson added two points (1 G, 1 A) and freshmen Jack Bowie and Myles Hickey each chipped in a goal.

Freshman Isaac Vanzomeren corralled a team-best nine ground balls and 11 faceoffs (11-30) while senior Luke Binder caused three turnovers for the first time since April 7, 2018 at Monmouth.

Sophomore Liam Brown and freshman Bryce Zell split time in goal; Brown started and saw his seven-game streak of double-digit saves snapped with six while Zell stopped a career-high eight in the second half. 

1ST QUARTER
NJIT took the first lead of the game on a score by Corry at the 13:09 mark but surrendered six straight goals before Wilson stopped the run by UAlbany (7-3, 5-2 AE) with three seconds left in the period.

2ND QUARTER
Fogerty converted on an unassisted shot to once again give a quarter's first points to the Highlanders but the Great Danes responded with a multi-goal run, this time four goals to push ahead by seven (10-3) at the half.

3RD QUARTER
UAlbany extended the second quarter's run to five to push the score to 11-3 but NJIT would control the rest of the quarter, netting five of the next seven scores to close the gap to five, 13-8. Hickey went unassisted (11:06) to start the run, followed by Wilson (9:17), Bowie from Willson (7:20), Corry (6:29), and Willson from Fogerty (1:19).

4TH QUARTER
NJIT was unable to sustain its offensive momentum in the final 15 minutes, going scoreless to end the game as UAlbany put up five goals.

OTHER NOTES
  • Wilson's last two-goal game came against Georgetown on April 20, 2019.
  • Hickey's goal on Saturday was the first of his career.
  • Vanzomeren's nine ground balls extend his team season high and are tied for sixth all-time in NJIT history (John Tachon also collected nine ground balls on March 7, 2020 against Manhattan.

NJIT will wrap up the regular season on Saturday, May 1 at home against UMBC. Game time is scheduled for Noon.
