Binghamton, NY - The NJIT baseball team split a doubleheader with host Binghamton on Sunday, winning the first game 2-1 before falling 6-3 in game two at Rumbletown Stadium.
The Highlanders are now 8-18 on the season and 7-13 in America East play, while the Bearcats' record now stands at 8-8, with all of their games being coming in AE action.
Game One
NJITÂ went down 1-0 as the Bearcats scored a run in the bottom of the third, but the Highlanders answered immediately, scoring a run on an RBI groundout from
Jared Donnelly.Â
The game remained tied until the seventh inning when
Albert Choi drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt, and came around to score on a BU error.Â
NJIT was able to win the game with two runs thanks to a dominant pitching performance from the tandem of
Grant Vurpillat and
Jake Rappaport. Vurpillat started the game and struck out six over five innings, before Rappaport got the final six outs to earn the win and improve to 2-0 on the mound this season.Â
Daniel Helfgott tallied two of six base hits for the Highlanders in the win. It was the junior's fifth multi-hit game of the season.
Game Two
The Highlanders scored the first run of the game in the top of the first when
Julio Marcano knocked in Choi, but Binghamton was able to score two runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead.
NJIT then scored two runs of its own in the top of the second as
Nick Hussey tripled in
Luke Longo and
Kevin Blum hit a single to score Hussey.
Binghamton tied the game in the fourth inning, however, and added a pair of runs in the sixth to go ahead 5-3. The Bearcats added a run in the seventh to make the contest a three-run game.
NJIT was unable to get any closer as BU won the game 6-3 and earned the series victory.
Freshman
Croix Jenkins pitched a pair of shutout innings for the Highlanders.
On Deck
