UNIVERSITY, PA--The NJIT women's fencing team wrapped up the first day of the 2021 NCAA Championship hosted by Penn State at the Bryce Jordan Center Saturday, with five Highlander fencers in the top 15 overall for their respective weapons.
Leading the way for NJIT was USFCA 2020 All-American Dorottya Berczy, who finished the day sitting in third in the women's sabre competition. Berczy picked up 11 wins out of 15 bouts for a .733 winning percentage. Teammate Cassandra Sehic registered seven wins and sits in 13th place.
In women's epee, 2021 Elite 90 Award winner Marina Arrese combined for eight wins in 15 bouts for a .533 winning percentage. Arrese finished the day in ninth place while classmate Dominika Pawlowska completed the day with seven victories and sits in 12th place.
Paloma Almodovar finished the first day with six wins in the women's foil competition, good for 15th place.
The NJIT women's fencers will resume competition Sunday morning when rounds four and five begin at 9 a.m. Following rounds four and five, the top four qualifiers from each weapon will compete in their respective semifinals beginning at 1 p.m.
