Newark, NJ - The NJIT women's volleyball team came from behind to defeat visiting Binghamton in a five-set thriller in America East action on Sunday at the Wellness and Events Center
The victory was the first of the season for NJIT, which trailed 1-0 and 2-1 in the match before winning the fourth set to tie the contest at 2-2.
In the winner-takes-all fifth set, the Highlanders never led until a kill from sophomore
Emma Godwin put them ahead 16-15. Godwin's classmate
Adriana Goetz-Morales finished things off, delivering a kill of her own to clinch the match for NJIT.
Godwin led the Highlanders with 13 kills and was joined in double figures by Goetz-Morales, who tallied 12 kills with a .360 hitting percentage, and freshman
Elley Torres, who finished with 10 kills.
Kyla Lannert handled the setting duties for NJIT, and dished out 37 assists, one less than her career-high, which she set earlier in the day vs. UMBC.
The Highlanders won the defensive battle at the net, out-blocking Binghamton 10-7.5 with sophomore
Courtney Branch's six blocks (one solo) being a match high.
Sunday's win was the first America East Conference win in program history after NJIT joined the conference in July, 2020.
NJIT will return to action on Monday with two more America East matches at the WEC. The Highlanders will take on UMBC at 10am and then Binghamton at 7pm.
