Women's Soccer Plays Maine To Draw In America East Premiere

ORONO, ME --- In its first-ever America East contest, the NJIT women's soccer team earned a point in a 1-1 road draw against the Maine Black Bears Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond.

The Highlanders (2-1-1, 0-0-1 AE) opened the game's scoring in the 38th minute. A poor clearance by Maine goalkeeper Kira Kutzinski bounced to the foot of sophomore Lauren Chamberlain, who took one long touch and sent a shot on goal. The low rolling shot looked to be covered by Kutzinski but went through her legs and into the net. After a brief discussion by officials about a possible offsides call, the goal was upheld, much to the delight of the Highlanders.

Maine (0-3-1, 0-1-1 AE) drew even with NJIT in the second half, converting on a corner kick in the 71st minute.

Redshirt sophomore Molly Saylor was exceptional in goal, playing all 110 minutes and matching her career high with a season-best ten saves (North Florida, Oct. 6, 2019). The ten stops are currently one shy of the America East lead.
