NEWARK, NJ-- NJIT men's volleyball student-athlete Luca Berger has been selected EIVA Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Monday.
Berger helped lead the Highlanders to a series sweep of Saint Francis University on Thursday and Friday at the Wellness and Events Center in Newark. NJIT is now 7-1 and is tied with Penn State for first place in the EIVA.
A native of Brazil, Berger was solid at the net in both matches, recording eight blocks (two solo) on Thursday and four more on Friday. The graduate student also played well offensively, hitting .500 and .375, respectively, in the two wins over the Red Flash.
Berger is the second Highlander to be named EIVA Defensive Player of the Week, joining teammate Julian Meissner, who earned the award on February 8 following a series sweep of Sacred Heart.
NJIT will return to action next weekend when it travels to Virginia to take on George Mason in another two-day series. First serve against the Patriots is slated for 7pm on Friday and Saturday.
