No. 17 Penn State Sweeps No. 19 NJIT in Friday Night EIVA Matchup


UNIVERSITY PARK, PA — No. 17 Penn State defeated No. 19 NJIT in straight sets, 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-21), Friday evening in EIVA men's volleyball action inside Rec Hall.

With the win, Penn State improves to 13-7 overall and remains unbeaten in conference play at 5-0. NJIT moves to 13-7 on the season and 5-2 in the EIVA.

NJIT came out strong in the opening set, taking an early 5-2 lead and extending it to 10-5 behind a four-point run. Penn State answered with an 11-2 surge to seize control and build a 20-14 advantage. The Highlanders trimmed the deficit late, but the Nittany Lions closed on a 2-0 run to secure the 25-19 win and a 1-0 match lead.

Penn State carried that momentum into the second set, jumping out to a 10-4 lead and later extending it to 17-11. NJIT responded with a 5-1 run to pull within two at 18-16 on a kill by Wiktor Nowak. The Highlanders continued to pressure, closing to within one at 21-20 and again at 24-23, but Penn State held on for the 25-23 victory and a 2-0 advantage.

In the third set, the Nittany Lions used a 7-3 run to take early control and pushed their lead to 11-5. NJIT battled back, cutting the deficit to 20-15 and later using a 4-1 run to get within two at 23-21. Penn State, however, scored the final two points to complete the sweep with a 25-21 win.

Wiktor Nowak led the Highlanders with 10 kills, while freshmen Alex Heins and Daniel Latkowski added seven and six, respectively. Heins and Latkowski were efficient offensively, hitting .600 and .400. Setter Bruno Figueiredo totaled 24 assists, and Nowak, Heins, and Latkowski each recorded four total blocks.

The teams will meet again Saturday at Rec Hall, with first serve set for 3 p.m. on B1G+.
