Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Earns First Draw Of The Season At UMBC

BALTIMORE --- The NJIT women's soccer team picked up its first draw of the season, playing the UMBC Retrievers to a scoreless tie Thursday evening at Retriever Soccer Park.

The fourth ever meeting between two teams that are 1-1-1 against each other all time played out just as evenly as one would expect.

NJIT (4-10-1, 2-3-1 AE) and UMBC (5-6-3, 1-4-1 AE) took plenty of chances - a series-high 33 combined shots (19-14 NJIT) - but each team was steadied by their stellar goalkeeping play.

For the Highlanders, redshirt junior Molly Saylor registered ten saves on the evening, marking the fourth time the South Park native has logged double-digit saves in a single game. She originally set her high water mark against North Florida on October 6, 2019 and matched it once during the 2020 season (at Maine, March 14, 2021) and once prior this season (at Pittsburgh, August 29).

On the offensive end, after a slow first half that saw NJIT get outshot by the UMBC, 7-4, the Highlanders ratcheted up the pressure in the second half and both overtimes. NJIT took 11 shots in the second half alone, nearly matching UMBC's tally for the entire game (14).

The strongest stretch of play for the Highlanders came in the opening ten minutes of the second half. NJIT more than doubled its first half output from the 50th to 54th minutes with shots from freshman Caroline Caputo (2), fifth year Tara Walenczyk, junior Lauren Chamberlain, and sophomore transfer Gabby Zalot. UMBC's Abbey Cowles proved up for the task, making saves on five of NJIT's shots in the second en route to eight saves on the night.

NJIT's closest chances game in the second half and second overtime. In the 52nd minute, Caputo took a shot from the rounded top of the box that forced Cowles to dive to her right to keep the ball out of the net. In the 102nd minute, fifth year Christine Conaghy and Chamberlain perfectly executed a give-and-go through run from midfield on but Conaghy's low weighted shot rolled just past the right far post.

OTHER NOTES
  • In addition to making ten saves tonight, Saylor also recorded her fifth solo shutout of the year and and tenth of her career (four in 2019, one in 2020).
