CARY, NC - All 10 NJIT baseball players in the lineup scored at least one run as the Highlanders defeated Bucknell 23-14, in a wild non-conference matchup to clinch a three-game series over the Bison at the USA Baseball Complex on Sunday.
NJIT (6-4) won two of three this weekend over Bucknell (3-8) after defeating the Bison once on opening weekend, also in Cary.
The Highlanders struck first with a pair of runs in the second and added five more in the third to take what felt like a comfortbale 7-1 lead.Â
NJIT's lead became 15-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh before Bucknell made things interesting, plating nine to make it a three-run contest.
The Highlanders answered with six more in the eighth to go ahead 21-12, and ultimately won the game 23-14 to take their second-consecutive series.
Freshman
Luke Longo was 4-for-5 and drove in three runs, while
Julio Marcano and
Paul Franzoni each finshed with five RBI. Marcano and his brother,
David Marcano, each tallied three hits in Sunday's win.
Five different Highlanders - J. Marcano, Franzoni,
Albert Choi,
Nick Hussey, and
Jared Donnelly each came around to score three times.
NJIT's 18 hits were one off its season high and marked the sixth time in 10 games this season that the squad finished with 10+ hits. Four of the hits on Sunday were extra base hits, including Franzoni's second home run of the season.
Ryan Fischer started on the mound for NJIT and was the squad's most effective pitcher, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing just one earned run, a solo home run.
The Highlanders return to the diamond on Wednesday when they play their first mid-week game of the season at Fordham. First pitch is slated for 3pm in The Bronx.
