NJIT Falls Short in Low-Scoring Game at Fairleigh Dickinson

HACKENSACK, NJ--Visiting NJIT fell short, 54-48, in a low-scoring game at Fairleigh Dickinson Friday evening in women's basketball non-conference action at the Rothman Center.

In a low-scoring affair for both teams, the Highlanders shot 30.9 percent (17-for-55) while the Knights shot 30 percent (18-for-60) from the field.  Fairleigh Dickinson outscored NJIT in the first (20-13) and fourth (20-15) quarters while combining for 22 points off the Highlanders 19 turnovers.

Fairleigh Dickinson (2-1) was led by two double-figure scorers -- Chloe Wilson (14) and Madison Stanley (13).

Lone senior Ellyn Stoll led NJIT (1-3) with 13 points, notching her third straight game, registering double-figures and shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line.  

Freshman Lyzi Litwinko added eight points, shooting 4-for-7 from the field.  Litwinko, the reigning America East Conference Rookie of the Week, set a new personal mark with seven rebounds as the Highlanders out-rebounded the Knights, 46-to-34. 

Newcomer Lilly Anderson grabbed six rebounds followed by sophomore Kenna Squier with five.

Fairleigh Dickinson scored the first six points of the contest behind a pair of three-pointers.  Squier got the Highlanders on the board with a driving layup high off the backboard at the 8:33 mark.  After a scoreless 2:30, Madison Stanley put the Knights ahead, 8-2, but the visiting Highlanders used a 7-0 spurt to take its first lead of the contest, 9-8, just under the four-minute mark.  Stoll combined for five points in the run.  The Knights used an 8-1 spurt, extending its lead to six, 16-10, behind six points from reigning Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week Chloe Wilson.  

Trailing 19-13 to start the second quarter, NJIT came out on fire, slimming the Knights lead to one, 22-21, after an 8-1 spurt after back-to-back three-pointers by Kendle Dalrymple and Grace Plummer.  Fairleigh Dickinson pushed its lead to three, 26-23, with three minutes left in the half.  NJIT's Stoll knocked down a pair of free throws, to pull within one, 26-25, heading into the half.

Stoll and Stanley shared game-high honors after the low-scoring first half with seven points. Anderson led all players at the half with six rebounds as the Highlanders held a 26-to-17 advantage.

NJIT opened the third stanza with four straight points, taking its largest lead of the game, three 29-26.  Neither team scored over the next two minutes until the 6:17 mark on a layup by Fairleigh Dickinson's Celia Carbonell, which sparked a 6-0 run, pulling ahead of the visitors, 32-29.

A close contest heading into the fourth quarter, Litwinko scored six quick points, pushing the Highlander lead to three, 43-40, just under the seven minute mark.  Tied at 43-all at the 5:16 mark, Fairleigh Dickinson went on a 7-2 run, extending its lead to five, 50-45, with :32 seconds. 

The two teams will return to action on Saturday, December 12 with tip-off slated for 7pm in Newark, NJ inside NJIT's Wellness and Events Center.  Saturday's contest will mark the home opener for the Highlanders.  Fans can watch the game live on ESPN+.
