Women's Soccer Rolls To 5-0 Victory Over Rider

NEWARK, N.J. --- The NJIT women's soccer team earned its second straight victory, shutting out the Rider Broncs 5-0 Thursday evening on Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.

The win brings NJIT (2-2-1) back to .500 on the season and gives the Highlanders their first winning streak of the year. The 5-0 shutout was NJIT's largest since blanking Jacksonville 4-0 on the road last year (September 30) and its biggest in non-conference play since last year's NJIT-Rider matchup in Lawrenceville (2-0 on September 2).

Fiona Wright scored a pair of goals in her first start of the season and became NJIT's leader in Division I career goals (13) in the process. Bailey Chant, Fiorella Doglio, and Lauren Chamberlain added a score each to the ledger - the first career scores for Chant and Chamberlain and the fifth for Doglio. Chant, Emily Heckman, and Madison Taibl recorded assists on three of the Highlanders' five scores.

After forcing a free kick from just outside the box, Wright scored her first goal of the season (14') by sending her shot directly into Rider's wall and past Bronc keeper Carmen Carbonell. The goal was the 12th of Wright's young career, tying Highlander alumna Kori Washington (2007-10) for the Division I school record.

Bailey Chant doubled NJIT's lead and scored her first collegiate goal in dramatic fashion (43'), launching a long-range shot from over 30 yards out and beating an outstretched Carbonell to the left side.

Wright picked up where she left off in the 50th minute, taking a pass from Emily Heckman on the right corner of the box, dodging a Rider defender, and bending home a score to the upper left of the goal.

Doglio added the scoreboard with an impressive header in the 71st minute, taking a right side cross from Madison Taibl from about 25 yards out and finding the back of the net while running in from the left side of the six-yard box.

Chant picked up an assist on the night as she set up Chamberlain's goal (84') on a long run and close range finish from the right side.

Goalkeeper Molly Saylor returned to her starting post, playing all 90 minutes and coming up one shy of her career high of seven saves (at Maryland, August 25).

NEXT UP
NJIT will wrap up its non-conference schedule with three straight road games, beginning with a trip to New Rochelle, N.Y. to face Iona on Sunday, September 8 at Noon.
