NEWARK, N.J. --- Goals from
Nora O'Connor and
Whitney Roth propelled the NJIT women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Saint Peter's Peacocks Saturday afternoon at Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
After a pair of one-goal losses and a season-opening scoreless draw, NJIT (1-2-1) earned its first victory of the season in dominating fashion. The Highlanders outshot the Peacocks (2-1) 30-2, including a 21-0 first half.
The Highlanders had already logged 16 shots throughout the first 38 minutes before
Bailey Chant fired a shot from outside the box that was saved by Saint Peter's. The Peacock goalkeeper deflected it to the left of the goal, where
Lauren Chamberlain was in position to reclaim possession of the ball. After a few touches, Chamberlain sent a pass to the front of the box as O'Connor made her way through the six-yard box to tap home NJIT's first goal of the year (39') and the first goal of her career.
O'Connor's goal was also the first for Women's Soccer on the new Lubetkin Field at Mal Simon Stadium.
NJIT's insurance goal came in the 60th minute as
Jessica Aseng sent a ball towards the box from near midfield,
Fiona Wright tapped it to the right on the volley, and Roth scored off one touch to the lower left of the goal. Roth's tally was also the first of her collegiate tenure.
The 30-shot tally marks the most for a Highlander team in its Division I era, eclipsing the 27 attempts the team took against South Carolina State on November 7, 2007.
Cassidy Landis started her first-ever college game in place of
Molly Saylor and pitched a shutout with one save.
