Box Score NEWARK, N.J. --- The NJIT men's lacrosse team was unable to secure its second home victory of the season, falling 18-5 to the Fairfield University Stags Tuesday evening at Rutgers-Newark's Alumni Field.
Ryan Darrow registered the third hat trick of his career - all coming this season - and
Vincent D'Agostino matched his career-high with a pair of scores for NJIT (1-8).
John Tachon led the Highlanders defense with six ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers while
Alexzander Hunt made a game-high 18 saves.
Fairfield (5-3) shut out NJIT in the first quarter but Darrow put the Highlanders on the board with 11:32 left in the second on a man-up goal set up by
Collin Fogerty After another Stags goal, Darrow converted on a second extra man opportunity - this time assisted by
Noah Kepes - to keep the deficit at six, 8-2, with 6:31 left in the half. Fairfield extended its lead before the half by netting three more goals to take an 11-2 lead into the break.
The Highlanders added two more goals to their ledger in the third, with
Vincent D'Agostino netting the first goal of the period (11-3) and Darrow securing his third goal - and the 50th of his career - to make the score at 12-4. The Stags would end the quarter with three more goals to go up 15-4.
D'Agostino once again started off a quarter with a score, going unassisted for his second goal of the game with 13:30 remaining (15-5) but Fairfield countered once more with three goals afterwards.
NJIT will play its final home game of the month on Saturday, March 23 when the Highlanders welcome Wagner to Newark. First faceoff is scheduled for Noon.
