Purdue Holds off NJIT, 3-2, to Take Rubber Game


MARION, NC—Senior right-hander Sean Lubreski pitched a quality complete game for NJIT but Purdue broke a 1-1 tie, scoring a pair of runs in the eighth to win the rubber game, 3-2, and take the series from the Highlanders at The Big League Camp Facility Sunday afternoon.

NJIT rallied in the top of the ninth, with a leadoff single by C Paul Franzoni followed by a walk from RF Matthew Cocciadiferro and SS Justin Etts loaded the bases on a fielding error by the Boilermakers third baseman. 

The Highlanders added a run on a wild pitch, pulling within one, 3-2, but with the tying run on third, Purdue's Trent Jones closed the door with three consecutive strikeouts, earning his first save of the season.

The two teams split Saturday's doubleheader, with the Highlanders (6-4-1), taking game one after a six-run burst in the tenth inning, securing a 9-3 victory.  The Boilermakers (3-10) won the nightcap, 9-8, on a walk-off base on balls.

Lubreski, making his fourth start of the season, pitched a complete game for NJIT Sunday, letting up 11 hits, three runs while striking out five Big Ten batters from Purdue.  Lubreski moves to an even 2-2 on the season.

Sophomore co-captain Franzoni led the Highlanders, going 2-for-3 with one run while LF Julio Marcano finished 1-for-4, including his third home run of the season in the top of the seventh.

Three other Highlanders – 3B David Marcano, 2B Brett Helmkamp, 1B Nick Hussey and DH Edgar Badaraco registered a hit in the loss.

After five scoreless innings, Purdue struck first in the bottom of the sixth, on an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, taking a 1-0 lead.

NJIT tied the game at 1-1 with a leadoff home run by Julio Marcano, as the sophomore went yard, recording his second home run of the series with Purdue and third of the season.

In the top of the eighth, with the bases loaded, NJIT's Julio Marcano took the ball to deep right, nearly sending out a grand slam, but Purdue's RF Johnny Sage made the catch at the warning track.

Purdue scored twice in the bottom of the eighth on four singles two of which, RBI singles through the right side by C Zac Fascia and Sage for a 3-1 advantage.

For the three-game series, Julio Marcano batted .300 with six RBI, two home runs and a double while Etts batted .357, finishing 5-for-14 with four RBI and one home run.

NJIT will return to action on March 12 vs. Manhattan College in Wappingers Falls, NY.  First pitch is slated for 3pm.
