NEWARK, NJ – Michael Caufield tied a team record of 6 goals in one game for a player as the NJIT men's hockey team got their 1 st home win at the RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House. The Highlanders are now 2-7 in the CSCHC and 3-11 overall on the season. NJIT is now 5-6 against the Princeton Tigers in CSCHC era.
Caufield opened the scoring just before the midway point of the period to give NJIT the l-0 lead. The Tigers responded with two goals in a span of 55 seconds to take the lead late in the 1 st . But, the Higlanders would answer back with 3 goals in 1:25 interval to not only regain the lead, but to extend it to a 2-goal advantage after 1 period of play. Caufield would score the 1 st two goals (one on the power play) in that span to get a hat-trick.
Jeffrey Patterson would score a 5-on-3 power
play goal with 2 seconds left in the period to make it 4-2.
Princeton would show their resolve once again by tying the game in the 2 nd period at four apiece with goals coming at almost two and a half minute distance between each other.
Matthew Sendecki would get his 3 rd goal of the season as the Highlanders got the lead back at 6:21 of the period. The Tigers would tie the game back even at 5 past the halfway mark of the 2 nd . Caufield would break the tie with his 4 th goal of the game with less than three minutes remaining as NJIT
would have a 6-5 lead after the 2 nd intermission.
The Highlanders would tighten up defensively and extend the game out of reach in the 3 rd period.
Ted Lee would lengthen the lead back up to two goals with his 3 rd of the season at the halfway mark on a wraparound goal. Caufield would give NJIT its 1st three goal advantage at 15:36 of the 3rd period. The Tigers would score a goal with less than two minutes remaining to cut to deceit back to two goals. Caufield would seal the deal and put an exclamation point on his career night with a power play empty net goal.
Brian Byrnes made 31 saves to get his 2 nd win of the season.
