In its second-ever appearance in the ASUN Women's Soccer Tournament, the No. 6 seed NJIT women's soccer team recorded the program's first ASUN postseason victory with a 2-1 comeback win over the No. 3 seeded Liberty Flames Friday evening on the campus of Lipscomb University. The win - against the same Liberty team NJIT lost to five days ago in Newark - moves the Highlanders to 7-7-3 on the season and propels NJIT into the ASUN semifinals against No. 2 seed Lipscomb on Sunday afternoon. Liberty concludes its year with a 10-7-2 overall record. The first half saw Liberty control much of the offensive gameplay (outshot NJIT 9-1) but the Highlanders' trademark defense held its own when it needed to. Led by newly minted ASUN honorees Siani Magruder (Second Team All-ASUN) and Molly Saylor (ASUN All-Freshman), NJIT withstood the Liberty attack at every turn. Saylor made two of her seven saves within the first 16 minutes of the first half and Magruder helped the NJIT backline keep the Flames scoreless going into halftime. Liberty continued to add pressure to the NJIT defense as the second half started and finally broke through in the 72nd minute. After taking seven of the first eight shots in the half, and Saylor stopping a pair of chances, Liberty turned a cross from the left corner into a chip-in in front of Saylor and a 1-0 advantage. Each team recorded a shot apiece over the next six-plus minutes before NJIT was able to net an equalizing goal in the 79th minute. On an offensive push started by Alexis Magruder, Lauren Chamberlain took the ball down the right side, dodged two defenders to get into the 18-yard box, and curved home her fourth goal of the year to the upper right near post. Less than two minutes later, Fiona Wright rejoined Chamberlain atop NJIT's scoring ledger and put home the eventual game-winner goal (81'). As Liberty attempted to clear the ball from their defensive 18-yard box, Chamberlain got a foot on a bouncing ball to settle it some. A Liberty defender tried to clear it once again but instead deflected it off a Flame teammate and directly toward Wright, who drew ASUN Goalkeeper of the Year Melody Jayroe off her line and slipped a low shot past her for the lead. Liberty took four more shots in the final 9:52 but Saylor swatted away the first two and the NJIT defense handled the last two. OTHER NOTES NJIT is the only team to score two or more goals in regulation against Liberty all season. The No. 6 seed has won three consecutive first round ASUN Tournament matches and seven of the last ten. NEXT UP NJIT and Lipscomb will face each other on Sunday, November 3 at 2 p.m. ET at the Lipscomb Soccer Complex. The winner of NJIT-Lipscomb will play the No. 1 FGCU / No. 5 Kennesaw State winner on Saturday, November 9.
