No. 6 Women's Soccer's Season Ends In ASUN Semifinals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- The 2019 season for the NJIT women's soccer team came to a bittersweet conclusion Sunday afternoon as the No. 6 seeded Highlanders conceded a 1-0 victory to the No. 2 seeded Lipscomb Bisons in the semifinals of the ASUN Conference Tournament.

NJIT finishes its year with a 7-8-3 overall record. Lipscomb will host No. 5 seeded Kennesaw State for the ASUN Conference Championship on Saturday, November 9.

Sunday's contest looked like a mirror image of NJIT's quarterfinal against Liberty. Lipscomb (13-5-1), the ASUN's top-ranked offense, pressed NJIT for much of the first half but NJIT's third-ranked defense continued to limit and stifle the Bisons' opportunities.

Molly Saylor capped a stellar first season as NJIT's starting goalkeeper by making five of her six saves in the first half - all against Lipscomb leading scorer Olivia Doak - and logging her fifth game this year with five saves in the opening half.

As they have done many times this year, NJIT turned up their offensive pressure in the second half as the Highlanders worked to create more chances. The team's first shot of the game came in the 62nd minute as Fiona Wright powered her way through the Lipscomb defense and put a shot on goal that was saved.

The NJIT defense made a major stand in the 82nd minute. Lipscomb forced three consecutive corner kicks in a minute's span but the Highlanders kept the Bisons off of the board.

NJIT nearly pushed the scoreless game into overtime but a few minutes later (87'), a cross that Saylor deflected to the left of goal was gathered by Lipscomb and passed back to the right and put home.

The Highlanders were able to get off one more shot but Lauren Chamberlain's attempt went out wide left.
