NEWARK, NJ--For the second straight night, the NJIT men's hockey team battled with their opposition for 40 minutes, but could not keep up in the 3 rd period. The Rutgers Ice Knights were able to win by the score of 6-3 at the RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House.
The Highlanders are yet to register a win on the young season and now that lost their 1 st six contests. They now have a CSCHC record of 0-2 and Rutgers now leads 4-3 in meetings since they joined the CSCHC in
the 2016-2017 season.
The Ice Knight struck 1 st at 8:57 into the period to take an early lead.
Michael Caufield tied the game a minute and 35 seconds later and that was all the scoring for the period.
The assists on the goal went to
Ted Lee and
Dennis Sikorjak.
Rutgers would re-take the lead just 30 seconds into the 2 nd period on the power play to get a 2-1 lead. The Highlanders would respond with their own power play goal when Caufield scored his 2nd goal of the night at 7:05 in the period. That would be Caufield 5 th goal of the season with Dalton Smith and
James Lyle getting the assists. Just like the 2 nd period, the score would remain tied after the 2 nd intermission.
The Ice Knights would once again take the lead on the power play a minute and 51 seconds into the 3 rd period to make it 3-2. But, unlike in the 1 st and 2 nd periods, Rutgers was able to tack on three more goals after, which proved to be too much to overcome for NJIT. The Highlanders did get the final tally of the game when Dalton Smith scored on the power play. The assists went to
James Copeland and
James Lyle on the goal.

The Highlanders will embark on a 7-game road trip that starts next week with a Friday night battle at West Long Branch vs. the Monmouth Hawks at 8 pm and Saturday night in South Orange vs. the Seton Hall Pirates at 9:45. NJIT will return to the RWJBarnabas Health Hockey House on November 10 th at 8:30 against the Princeton Tigers.
