Track and Field Competes at New York City Gotham Cup

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. --
The NJIT indoor track and field programs took part in the annual New York City Gotham Cup Friday afternoon at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island.
 
MEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Reigning ASUN Conference Field Performer of the Week Nasiem Chandler continued his strong 2019 start by winning the long jump with a mark of 7.28m (23-10.75). The title was one of three secured by the Highlander men at Gotham.
  • Alex Ortega, Acacio Escada, Matt Bacchi and Ryan Budhu combined to take the 4x400 meter relay, edging out St. Francis Brooklyn by .17 seconds with a winning time of 3:19.17.  The school-record performance qualified the Highlanders to compete at the Millrose Games on February 9.
  • The Highlander men also won the distance medley relay as Jonathan Mobisa, Michael Girock, Andrew Shenoda and Gavin Camby ran a joint time of 10:38.53.
  • Ortega finished a close second in the 400 meter dash, clocking in an impressive 49.30 - just .12 off the winning time.
  • Budhu ended the 1000 meters with a top-5 showing, placing fourth after a run of 2:29.15.
  • Calvin Gould's mark of 4.35m (14-3.25) in the pole vault was enough to secure eighth place in the event, just ahead of ninth-place teammate Brandon Kong (4.20m / 13-9.25).
  • Mobisa's time of 1:58.68 in the 800 meters slotted him in ninth place overall and earned him a spot in NJIT's all-time top five.
  • The 4x800 grouping of Brian Azevedo, Shawn Mageean, James Nagotko and Ali Merdan took ninth place after clocking in at 8:37.46.
  • Gerard Gill took 12th in the 3000 meters after producing a time of 8:56.35.
 
WOMEN'S HIGHLIGHTS
  • Miku Okada's leap of 1.60m (5-3.00) in the high jump was good enough to tie for 4th place overall. The mark ended up securing the best performance of the meet for the Highlander women and tying the season best that she has reached on two other occasions. 
  • Sarah Morgan, Sae Almeida, Chloe Jelley and Cassandra Raia ended the Women's DMR in sixth place with a combined time of 13:19.22.
  • Sydne Nance earned a top-10 finish in the 200 meter dash - and a spot in the NJIT all-time top five - after clocking an eighth-place time of 26.15.
  • Jelley followed suit in the 1000 meters, breaking the top-10 by taking ninth with a mark of 3:08.27.
  • The 4x800 quartet of Kristina Boafo, Jaela Small, Emily Florian and Rosa Moss took 10th in the event with a time of 10:52.22.
  • Shannon Turner also placed 10th in the weight throw, recording a toss of 13.90m (45-7.00).
 
 OTHER NOTES
  • Three of the Highlanders' performances at Gotham - Jelley and Budhu in their respective 1000 meter races and the men's 4x400 relay - established new NJIT records.
  • Sara Wells finished 23rd in the weight throw but her top toss of 12.10m (39-8.00) moved her into the top five all-time at NJIT.
