JACKSONVILLE, FL – The NJIT women's soccer team tied the school-record for wins, earning its ninth win, a 4-0 shutout victory at Jacksonville Sunday afternoon in ASUN Conference action at Southern Oaks Stadium.
NJIT, which has won the last three consecutive matches and last five-out-of-six, improves to 9-3-1 and 3-1 in the ASUN while the Dolphins drop to 1-10-1 overall and 1-2 in conference play.
The nine overall wins and seven shutouts thus far in 2018 tie the school record, which was set in 2017 under head coach
Ally Nick.
Nick had a few words after the match, "Today was a great team win. A shutout and four goals on the road is a great accomplishment for our program. I couldn't be more proud of the focus the girls had going into this weekend. This is a special group."
In the 21
st minute, NJIT opened the scoring when
Katrina Nguyen-DeMary tallied her first goal of the season grabbing the rebound off of her own shot.
Junior defender
Emily Heckman added some cushion for the Highlanders, after a battle off a corner kick in the box, giving the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.
To start of the second half, in the 49
th minute, NJIT scored again when senior
Arianna Gerber served a ball from the left side into
Noelle Batista who tallied her first goal of the season.
Gerber ranks first all-time in the Division I record era in career assists with 12 and is three shy from tying the all-time record (15) held by
Erika Taugher.
NJIT's leading-scorer
Fiona Wright netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 75
th minute, burying a long shot into the top right corner.
Amelia Sapirman recorded her seventh shutout of the season and becomes the all-time leader in shutouts in a season. She ranks second in career shutouts with (10). Her nine wins in 2018 ranks first for most wins for a goalkeeper in a season.
Sapirman four saves in the win and Brittany Hundley made five saves for the Dolphins.
The Highlanders will host FGCU on Thursday October 4 for a 3pm game at Kean University East Campus. NJIT will be celebrating "Pink Month" and will be accepting donations for breast cancer.
