Women's Soccer Moves Into First Place with Win Over FGCU

Post Game Interview

HILLSIDE, NJ
—NJIT women's soccer moves into first place in the ASUN Conference with a 1-0 win over FGCU on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Kean University's East Campus Facility.

The Highlanders posted its third consecutive shutout, moving to 10-3-1 overall and 4-1 in the ASUN, breaking the NJIT record for wins in a season.

FGCU, five-time defending ASUN Conference champions, fall to 9-2-2 and 3-2 in conference play, started off the game with an early opportunity in the eighth minute on a right-footed shot by FGCU goal and point leader Evdokia Popadinova, saved by a diving Amelia Sapirman, the Highlanders graduate student goalkeeper.

Sapirman made five saves and broke up many more plays in the box for her 10th win of the season. With the win over FGCU, Sapirman became the program leader in career shutouts for an NJIT goalkeeper with 12.

At the half, FGCU outshot the Highlanders, 8-1. The only shot attempt for NJIT in the first 45 minutes came in the 14th minute off a strike from Highlander goal leader Fiona Wright.

The Eagles started the second half with a dangerous opportunity two minutes into the second half on a header by Cassidy Morgan, which hit off the cross bar and over the net.

A long range attempt by Wright in the 49th minute sailed wide to the left, and the Highlanders kept attacking hard for the following three minutes.

In the 52nd minute, NJIT got on the scoreboard on a short free kick by senior Arianna Gerber to Nicole Loehle following an FGCU yellow card.

Loehle netted her second goal of the season, and second game-winning goal while Gerber's assist, her fifth of the season and 14th for her career, ranks her second all-time (one behind program leader Erika Taugher).

The Eagles kept up the pressure after the goal, recording 10 more shots in the second half, three of them coming in the final 10 minutes of play.

NJIT will return to action on October 7 when the Highlanders visit Stetson. Kickoff is set for 1pm. The Highlanders registered a 1-0 win over the Hatters last season.
