Highlanders Post First ASUN Win; Wright Breaks DI Scoring Record

LYNCHBURG, VA – NJIT women's soccer defeated Liberty 3-1 for their first ASUN Conference win of the season with the help of freshman Fiona Wright who scored two of the Highlanders three goals.

Wright scored her sixth and seventh goals of the season ranking her first all-time in the NJIT DI record books for goals in a season.

Head coach Ally Nick had a few words about the game, "This game was a good response from Friday, especially a tough travel weekend. We battled for every 50/50 ball and played more as a team than we have all season. Fiona keeps showing the ASUN what she is capable of and why she should be a contender for Rookie of the Year, but it is also the support of the players around her that gave us that win."

The Highlanders (7-3-1, 1-1 ASUN) started the scoring when Wright made a run to the endline and found Tara Walenczyk waiting inside the box. Walenczyk shot the ball and was rejected by her defender, but earned a second chance blasting it past an outreaching Liberty goalkeeper.

In the 33rd minute Wright added another goal for NJIT, beating two defenders and finishing to the right lower corner of the net.

The Flames (0-9, 0-2 ASUN), who are new to the ASUN, closed the gap, with a goal from Avery Belk in the 66th minute, Liberty's first goal in conference play.

Wright added a cushion goal for the Highlanders, stopping a clear from the Flames and scoring from 25 yards out.

Melody Jayroe made six saves on the day, and for the Highlanders Amelia Sapirman tallied eight saves in the win.

NJIT will continue with ASUN play heading to Jacksonville next week to compete against North Florida on September 28 and Jacksonville on September 30.
