HILLSIDE, NJ – NJIT women's soccer dropped its first home loss of the season in a 5-1 defeat to Lipscomb in ASUN Conference action on Friday afternoon at Kean University East Campus Facility.
"We expected going in that it was going to be tough match, Lipscomb is a good team," third-year head coach
Ally Nick added post game. "Lipscomb finished tied for first last year. What is upsetting is the score line of us giving up the five goals. That isn't our style, that isn't what we take pride in. We need to have difference makers to step up for us right now. Freshman Fiona (Wright) stepped up and got the goal but the way she played was phenomenal. We need players to feed off of that more."
Freshman
Fiona Wright scored the Highlanders (6-3-1, 0-1 ASUN) lone goal, a header coming off a corner kick by teammate
Siani Magruder.
Coach Nick elaborated on Wrights game, "We knew that Fiona has the potential to score and today she showed she could do it against a tough defensive line. She needs to keep playing that way, it's going to take all pieces to back her play. We are proud of how she is playing."
The Lady Bisons (6-3-2, 1-0 ASUN) received goals from four different players, taking a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Riley Henry posted two goals and an assist for the Lady Bison, while Olivia Doak and Maycie McKay each added a goal and an assist. Brooke Brenner also scored for the Lady Bisons.
Lipscomb had the edge in shots by only five, 20-15.
Goalkeeper Kate Mason, reigning ASUN Conference Defensive Player of the Week made seven saves in her sixth win of the season and for NJIT, graduate student Amelia Sapiman posted a career-high 10 saves.
The Highlanders continue ASUN play on Sunday, traveling to the newest member in the ASUN Confernece, Liberty, for a 1pm match in Lynchburg, VA.
