BALTIMORE, MD - NJIT's
Dunja Trajkovic scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute as the Highlanders defeated UMBC, 3-2, in overtime Sunday afternoon.
The win for NJIT is the first-ever against UMBC.
"It wasn't our best performance but this team is finding ways to win, especially on the road," head coach
Ally Nick commented. "It is good to have Tara (Walenczyk) back because she brings another element to our attack. Before overtime, I told the team that how we come out in overtime defines us as a team. Brooke (McGee) had a great chance that led to the corner kick and then her awareness to leave the ball for Dunja (Trajkovic) was brilliant."
NJIT (6-2-1) outshot the Retrievers (0-8) 11-9 and had the edge in corner kicks 9-2.
Sophomore
Jennifer Callaghan got the Highlanders on the board in the 23rd minute when she headed home senior
Arianna Gerber's corner kick into the back of the net.
The Retrievers scored two goals in the second half, the first goal coming from Laura Ventura in the 54th minute and minutes later from Meredith Webber gave UMBC the 2-1 lead in the 59th minute.
NJIT pushed overtime with a goal in the 87th minute by
Tara Walenczyk.
Two minutes into overtime, junior Trajkovic converted Katrina Nguyen-Demary's corner kick giving the Highlanders the 3-2 win.
Graduate student
Amelia Sapirman posted five saves in the win and Leah Roth made one save for UMBC.
"It was a good result leading us into ASUN Conference play and a tough weekend ahead," Nick added.
The Highlanders will start up ASUN Conference play Friday, September 21 at 3pm against Lipscomb on the campus of Kean University East Campus Facility.
