WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ—Monmouth junior Dana Scheriff scored the lone goal of the match in the second minute as the Hawks held on to a 1-0 win over visiting NJIT Friday evening in the season opener for both team at Hesse Field on The Great Lawn.

Scheriff's goal, her first of the season, came on a shot fired 20 yards out off the crossbar, at the 1:34 mark.  The goal was set up by freshman Jill Conklin.

Junior keeper Amanda Knaub recorded the shutout with the win against the Highlanders, making three saves for the clean sheet.

The overall shots and corner kicks favored the home team, 11-7 and 4-1.  In the first half, the shots were tied at 4-4 and 2-1 in corner kicks.

NJIT graduate student goalkeeper Amelia Sapirman tallied two saves in 90 minutes of action.

Sophomore forward Christine Conaghy recorded two shots while five different Highlanders notched one.

Senior forward Brooke McGee was credited with the first shot of the match for NJIT in the 18th minute, which went wide.

With five minutes remaining in the first period, senior midfielder Noelle Batista chipped a shot from inside the box but went high.

In the 40th minute, Conaghy was fed the ball inside the box but her header was saved by Knaub.  Three minutes later, Conaghy fired a shot that sailed high.

To start the second half, freshman Fiona Wright blasted a shot from outside the box as Monmouth keeper tucked it away.

NJIT goalkeeper Sapirman made a diving save in the 70th minute off a shot by MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Madie Gibson.

The Highlanders will return to action on Sunday at 1pm, hosting LIU Brooklyn at Kean University's East Campus Facility.
