HILLSIDE, NJ—
NJIT and LIU Brooklyn played to a 0-0 women's soccer double overtime draw Sunday afternoon in non-conference action at Kean University East Campus Facility.

NJIT, which opened its home portion of its schedule, hosting the Blackbirds, moved to 0-1-1 on the season while LIU Brooklyn stands at 0-1-1 on the young season.

The Highlanders held a huge advantage in shots (21-3) and corner kicks (10-1).  Senior Arianna Gerber paced the match with five shots (two on goal) followed by sophomore Jennifer Callaghan with four shots.

NJIT graduate student goalkeeper Amelia Sapirman played 110:00 minutes, making one stop while LIU Brooklyn's Megan Virgin, who played the full match, combined for seven saves – two coming in the first overtime.

"We had a lot of momentum and played well," third year head coach Ally Nick commented after the double overtime draw.  "The effort and work rate was there today against LIU Brooklyn.  We out-shot the Blackbirds 21-3, so to us we are creating a lot of chances.  We have a lot of players that can find that connection, finding that final ball and finishing our chances.  Big players need to step up and get those results.  Our backline stepped up big time and shut down key players."

NJIT's Chinyere Chambers got the first shot off of the match in the sixth minute inside the box, saved by LIU Brooklyn keeper Virgin.

LIU Brooklyn had an opportunity in the 11th minute on a shot by Kimberly Butland, which was saved by a diving Amelia Sapirman, her only save of the match.

NJIT freshman Fiona Wright received a short pass from sophomore Katrina Nguyen-DeMary about 20 yards out in the 18th minute but her shot sailed over the crossbar.

An opportunity for the home team in the 28th minute outside the 18, went high off the boot of Gerber.

At the half, NJIT led the Blackbirds in shots (6-3) and in corner kicks (1-0).

In the second half, NJIT had two scoring chances in the 54th minute, first on a close shot inside the box by Jennifer Callaghan, which was punched out by LIU Brooklyn keeper and rebounded by Noelle Batista.  Batista settled the ball inside the box and shot to the left of the keeper but Virgin made a tremendous diving save to keep the Highlanders off the board.

In the 75th minute, Jessica Aseng blasted shot from the top of the box and missed tucking the ball under the crossbar to give the Highlanders the lead.

In the first overtime, NJIT's Gerber with a chance in the 98th minute, but LIU Brooklyn keeper Virgin stretched out for the save.

Sophomore transfer Tara Walenczyk made a run in the 101st minute for the Highlanders but LIU Brooklyn keeper slid to break up the play.  Gerber rebounded the ball, striking wide.

The Highlanders, in a stretch of three straight matches at home, will host Iona College on August 24 at 1pm on Kean University East Campus Facility.
