NEWARK, NJ—Another visible piece of NJIT sports history began to crumble on Tuesday, May 1, as heavy equipment clawed at the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center.

The facility, which was built in 1967 and dedicated on February 17, 1999 to Estelle and Zoom Fleisher, served as home of the NJIT Highlanders until the new state-of-the-art and multipurpose arena, the Wellness and Events Center, opened in November 2017.

In addition to locker rooms and office space, the Fleisher Athletic Center housed physical education department and served as the indoor student recreation facility.  It contained basketball, volleyball and racquetball courts, swimming pool with limited bleacher seating, weight rooms, jogging track and multipurpose space.

The most unique design feature of the 220,000-square-foot NJIT Wellness and Events Center, is the full-height glass wall along the north façade, which provides great views of the campus and the adjacent athletic field that will be constructed in the upcoming months.

Several casual seating areas have been located along the north facade corridor so this light-filled atrium space can also serve as an interactive social hub for students, faculty and staff.

The grandstand that runs along the base of the north facade is connected to the main corridor and doubles as a casual outdoor seating area that can be utilized for study on fair weather days.
