MADISON, NJ—NJIT, leading 4-3 at halftime, were outscored 11-2 in the second half as visiting Manhattan rolled to a 14-6 win in men's lacrosse action on Saturday at Ranger Stadium on the campus of Drew University.
Manhattan, snapped a four-game skid, moving to 4-6 on the season, while the Highlanders still in search of its first win of the 2018 season, fall to 0-12.
The Jaspers had three players register a hat trick – Brandon Grinnel (three goals, one assist), Luke Hansen (four goals, three assists) and CJ Scharf (three goals).
NJIT was led by
Cole Robillard and
Colton Johnson, who each recorded two goals and one assist each, combining for three points.
The Jaspers jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage, on a pair of goals by Scharf.
Highlanders Johnson got the scoring going for the Highlanders at the 2:19 mark of the first quarter, assisted by Robillard. With time winding down, junior
Ryan Darrow scored an assisted goal, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2, with twenty-eight seconds on the clock.
NJIT scored the two lone goals in the second period for either team, holding a 4-3 advantage heading into the half. Johnson scored his second goal of the game and fourth of the season, off a rebound at the 13:55 mark.
Robillard scored his 14
th goal of the season, giving the Highlanders its first lead of the game 4-3, with 8:26 on the clock.
To start the second half, Manhattan scored four straight goals in five possessions, taking its biggest lead of the contest, 7-4. Robillard tucked away his second goal of the game at the 3:28 mark as the Jaspers closed out the quarter, leading, 8-5.
The Jaspers added six goals in the fourth quarter, led by Hansen with three goals and two from Brandon Grinnell.
Jackson Boyd scored the Highlanders lone goal in the fourth, on a man-up, with 2:19 on the clock. The goal for Boyd was his third of the season.
Manhattan's Michael Zingaro made 14 saves while NJIT's
Nick Marzullo stopped five Jasper shots.
The Highlanders held an edge in shots 34-to-32 and ground balls 29-to-26.
NJIT will return to action at Monmouth on Saturday, April 7 in West Long Branch, NJ. The game is slated for 1pm.
